How to play Phoodle — one food word, six guesses
Find the food word
Find one five-letter food-related word in six guesses. A guess can be another accepted word, but the answer comes from this edition’s food answer list. Generic five-letter starters are not automatically accepted: CRANE, SLATE, STARE and AUDIO are all rejected by the current word list, while SPICE, SALTY and CURRY are accepted.
Type with your keyboard or tap the on-screen keys. Press Enter to submit and Delete or Backspace to remove a letter. The answer list and the accepted-guess list are not the same: the current lists contain 533 answers and 1,376 accepted forms, so many valid guesses cannot be the answer. The strategy page explains the difference.
Read the tile feedback
Green = correct position. Yellow = present elsewhere. Gray = that copy is absent.
A green tile means the right letter in the right position. A yellow tile means the letter belongs somewhere else. A gray tile means that copy of the letter is not used.
Repeated letters are counted as copies. Against BASIL, the guess LASSI has a yellow L, a green A, a green S, a gray second S and a yellow I. The second S receives no match because BASIL has only one S. Greens are assigned first, then yellows from the remaining copies.
Daily and practice
The daily puzzle is one fixed food word. Your progress saves in this browser as you play. Practice uses a separate puzzle selection and offers a new round without changing the daily answer. The daily sequence is this site’s own sequence, not the original Phoodle sequence.
Hard mode requires later guesses to keep previously revealed letters. High-contrast mode changes the colors, not their meaning. Clearing site storage removes saved progress; the privacy page lists what is stored.
Where to go next
The strategy page starts with the food-list constraint, then works through a two-candidate probe, a repeated-letter case and a position where one guess leaves only one possible answer. If you want the vocabulary counts first, begin with the accepted-list section.
